Before you install
- Installation and use of the L & R products:
L & R products need to be installed and used in accordance with the printed instructions in the packaging, printed inserts and the information published on the website www.boatlatch.com.au. Boat Latch Pty Ltd takes no responsibility for products that are not installed and used within these guidelines.
There is an incredible range of trailers with varying types of winch posts and platforms. Take a look at the ideal set up for your trailer and winch post and platform before you begin the installation process.

Your trailer set up
There is a huge range of trailers, with varying types of winch posts and platforms. But the ideal set up for using your L & R Boat Latch requires:
The correct angle
Having an approximately 15-degree angle where the latch meets the snare ensures your equipment operates at its best.
Latch support
Latch support ensures the functionality of your latch and keeps your warranty intact!
Adequate roller length
Your roller must project far enough up the bow so that it sits up against the bow with the latch far enough back.
The right winch post & platform
Almost all trailers use a demountable system that is easy to remove and replace
To measure your latch to snare angle, see page 3 of the Before You Install Guide.
Troubleshooting
1. I don’t have the correct angle
That’s OK! If you don’t have the correct angle you can simply adjust it by +-14 degrees by using our Wedge Kit. You could also switch out your winch post or winch platform for another from your local trailer supplier that will give you a better angle.
Alternatively contact us if you need assistance sourcing a suitable winch post or winch platform.
2. My latch has no support
Sometimes you might find that the front of your latch seems to be just sitting out in space with no backing support and no surface to mount the front latch bolt. In extreme circumstances an unsupported latch can bend, which will ruin its functionality. Even more importantly, if you install your latch without support, this will void your warranty!
No support = no warranty!
To add the required support, use our latch support which is part of the Wedge Kit.
3. My rollers aren’t long enough
This is a common problem on Towing Eye (aluminium boats) where the roller needs to be able to project out further to the bow. The problem is generally caused by the angle of the post. But it’s an easy fix with our Roller Extenders, and requires no expensive and messy cutting, drilling or welding.
4. I don’t have the right winch post or platform
Sometimes the winch post or platform don’t have room to mount the Boat Latch or give you unworkable angles. Fortunately, almost all trailers use a demountable system that is easy to remove and replace. You can even make your own!
4. I have a catamaran. What adaptations do I need?
Catamarans are fantastic boats, but due to their unique build, some adaptations may be needed to use the L & R Boat Latch. Get in touch with our expert team if you require assistance with your setup.
